(Mirecourt, 1798 – Paris, 1850)
Landscape on the farm
Oil on canvas
32.5 x 40.5 cm
Born in Lorraine, Jean-François Demay was born in the Vosges commune of Mirecourt, northwest of Épinal on May 18, 1798.
Self-taught - or a student of Jean-Louis Demarne according to the sources, he often painted the characters in the paintings of Budelot, Swebach, Pau de Saint-Martin, of a certain Bruandet and in some completed canvases of Michel. To illustrate this point, the landscape painting present at the Museum of Fine Arts of Beaune is co-signed by Budelot and Demay.
In a style close to Demarne, Demay exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1827 to 1846, pretty, well-composed village scenes, with a delicate and fine touch.
The artist died in Paris on October 2, 1850.
