Jacques DELANOY is an artist about whom we know little except for the information we have in the booklets of the numerous salons in which he participated in the provinces (Lyon, Rouen, Le Havre, etc.) and in Paris.

He was therefore a student of Auguste DUSSAUCE, A. ACLOCQUE and FEREY.

Between 1845 and 1888, DELANOY exhibited still lifes and landscapes at the Paris Salon. It is worth noting a particular painting presented in 1872 and entitled "The torrent of the Pique, near Juzet; valley of Bagnères-de-Luchon (Haute-Garonne)" which is to be compared with our oil and allows us to date the latter with a little more precision, around 1872.

The landscape represented here is located by the artist on the back of the work "A Bagnères-de-Luchon", a spa town in the Pyrenees located on the border with Spain, to the south of the Haute Garonne department, at the confluence of the Pique and the One.

Many famous visitors came to Luchon throughout the 19th century, attracted by the popularity of the Pyrenean thermal waters, launched by Empress Eugénie. LAMARTINE, HUGO, HEREDIA, ROSTAND, FLAUBERT, MAUPASSANT were among the illustrious guests of the place.

The beautiful poetry of this landscape is achieved by DELANOY with a chromatic economy which allows him to depict a simple grove of trees with great sensitivity.

Jacques DELANOY was the father of Hippolyte Pierre DELANOY, painter of history, still lifes and portraits.
