Son of the Lyon painter and decorator Jacques DELANOY (1820-1890), Hippolyte-Pierre was born in Glasgow on October 8, 1849. After studying under his father and at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon, the latter placed him in the hands of Charles GLEYRE to complete his artistic training. He then entered the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and studied under Armand-Félix JOBBE-DUVAL, Félix BARRIAS, Léon BONNAT and then Antoine VOLLON.

DELANOY began his official career at the Salon de Lyon in 1863 and remained an exhibitor there until 1887. At the same time, he also participated in the Salon des Artistes français in Paris between 1868 and 1899, where he exhibited sumptuous still lifes that became his trademark, as well as some landscapes that were often imbued with exoticism.

The State acquired several of his paintings between 1878 and 1883, thus proving the excellence achieved by DELANOY's art. Indeed, he excelled with oil painting to make armor and swords shine. Another facet of his work is the practice of pastel, which he used almost exclusively for his landscape compositions.

The artist died in Paris in 1899, at the age of 50.
